Disaster Management & Mitigation Training Week for NDBUS members






















A 5-day long training was started on “Disaster Management and Mitigation” issue for Capacity Building Support of NDBUS members under URBIS program on 23rd, 25th - 28th August, 2008 from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm. Training module designed and facilitated by Dr. A.Q.M. Mahbub (Prof. Dept. of Geography and Environment, University of Dhaka). This training week was designed for participants of NDBUS central committee, 2 ward committees (Korail & Rayerbazar) and 2 primary committees (Korail & Rayerbazar). Total 75 members from the above mentioned committees participated in the training. Contents of this training are as follows:
  • Concept and Definition of Disaster and Consequences of Disaster
  • Strategies to Mitigate Disaster: New and Old
  • Classification of Man-Made and Natural Disasters
  • Why Bangladesh is the most Disaster affected country in the World Map
    -Geographical Reasons
    -Economic Reasons
    -Social & Technical Reasons
    -Regional and International Reasons
  • Why Poor People suffer during Disaster
    -Lack of Education
    -Poverty
    -Social Status
    -Malnutrition & Ill Health
    -Political Weakness
  • Human Development towards reducing Disaster
  • Immediate Preparations just before Disaster
  • Disaster and Housing Preparation- Some pictorial tips on how to save houses during disasters
  • Disaster and Agriculture
  • Concept of Core-House
  • Design of Religious Structures helpful as safe shelters during disasters
  • Earthquake
    -Systems of Earthquake Forecasting. Tips on how to protect during Earthquake.
    -Awareness, Things to keep in mind while building houses in Earthquake-prone Areas.
    -What should we do before Earthquake?
    -What should we do during Earthquake?
    -What should we do after Earthquake?
  • Sources of Storm
  • Fire-Hazards and Essential things to do
    -Reasons for Fire-Hazard.
    -To protect ourselves from fire what should we do?
  • Essential Awarness about how to protect disaster
During the whole-day training session trainees were given checklist where they identified man-made and natural disasters. Parallel to this task they were divided into 3 groups named ‘Earthquake’, ‘Flood’ and ‘Fire’ for group presentation on how they could face these disasters as well as presented their learnings from the training. Group leader of each group presented their ideas to the Project Adviser Salma A. Shafi and CUS Chairperson Prof. Nazrul Islam. Honorary Secretary Dr. Nazem of CUS was also presented on some days.
