NDBUS Meets UPPR Team prior to Visit Narayanganj, Sirajganj and Kushtia

On 21st January, the URBIS Capacity Building Support Project for NDBUS arranged a briefing session about Urban Partnership for Poverty Reduction (UPPR) with the view to make familiar to NDBUS members the activities of UPPR presently ongoing in 30 cities of Bangladesh with support from DFID.

Michael Slingsby, Project Manager of UPPR delivered a short speech about UPPR project and its ongoing programmes in different districts. He explained the unique funding criteria of the project. Mr. Nazrul Islam, Town Manager Dhaka presented the activities of UPPR. Salma A. Shafi adviser of URBIS program in Dhaka conducted the briefing session.
After presentation of the UPPR Team, Salma A. Shafi, Azharul Islam UNDP Coordinator and Nazrul Islam responded to questions posed by NDBUS members. They emphasised the need for secure tenure and support for strong legal actions to stop evictions without rehabilitation. The participants also asked about female participation in development works, education and intensify activities on health and sanitation and housing schemes in the UPPR activities.
The UPPR team encouraged NDBUS members on taking housing savings program by themselves and assured them of launching housing program to provide shelter for all urban poor in future.
