Gender & Women Empowerment Training

URBIS team has organized ‘Gender and Women Empowerment’ training for NDBUS to empower women through awareness on rights issues, to motivate women who are not engaged in any economic activities to join in the workforce, to motivate women to contribute to their family and nation in socio-economic development. Total of 5 days training will be conducted in February ’09. The first training was held on 09.02.09 from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm and four more trainings will be held on 3rd and 4th week of February. 75 central, ward and primary committee members will be trained in 5 groups. Each group consists of 15 members and also includes male participants.
The training session was facilitated by URBIS project adviser Salma A. Shafi and training adviser Dr. Farzana Islam (Prof. Anthropology, Jahangirnagar University, Savar). The day long training included- concept, definition, and importance of women empowerment, personal experience sharing on domestic and other types of violence. Participants took part in role play in three situations; on sexual harassment in public transport, eve teasing in public road and markets. The training concluded with Women empowerment & development and question-answer sessions.
Trainees were given handout on ‘Gender and Women Empowerment’ which was discussed at 1st and 4th session with practical examples. In the 2nd session trainees shared various types of harassment related personal experiences. In 5th session all were involved in discussion on how to mitigate such types of occurrences with valuable advice of Dr. Islam. After 20 minutes of preparation 3 groups gave a good performance. The advisers commented on ways to find better solutions during these types of incidents. The training session concluded with ‘frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)’ which were answered by the project adviser and Prof. Islam.
At the end of the session there was an entertainment session where trainees performed at their free will.
